About Joe Felso

Joe Felso is Nelson Algren’s name for a generic Chicagoan. The label stands in for a common, quietly desperate identity . . . trying to make sense of living in a time and place—Chicago, but more broadly early 21st century America. My purpose in using a pseudonym is not to be anonymous. It’d be little trouble to find out who I am. Instead, I’d like to create a voice simultaneously my own and representative. Writing begins with the assumption that you can’t be the only one who feels as you do….or who would feel compelled to write at all?

D - I have nominated you for a “Thinking Blogger Award”. Now you are supposed to find 5 blogs that push your thinking buttons, nominate them on a blog entry, and display the Thinking Blogger Award logo in your post.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to load up the logo on my blog entry (am a complete idiot when it comes to computer - use it as a manual typewriter at best) Steve Danko, who nominated my blog, has posted the logo in his post. If you go into my About pages, you willl find the link to Steve’s site.
Your blog entries add immense richness to my days, and I am so glad to have found you! Propel it forward! G

Thank you—I’m flattered. I take it I can’t choose you because you tagged me, so I’ll give my list some thought and post it soon. I don’t know about the badge. I’m not sure I have the technosavy to do it either, but I’ll work on that too. Again, thanks! —D

Hi,

I found your blog through The Individual Voice, we’ve been exchanging comments on the same post you did and thought I would check out what you had to say. Just wanted to say hello, and let you know that I”ve enjoyed reading some of your entries. I am REALLY new to blogging - feel like the new kid at school!

Regards.

Welcome! I hope you will enjoy your experience as much as I have, and I will certainly take a look at your site. I know from seeing your comments on The Individual Voice that we are both parents, and parents certainly benefit from sharing. Thanks for visiting. —D

was curious with the last name and all i beleive my family is the only one in canada see ya

Go to Google Books and type in Joe Felso, and you will see where the name came from. Similar to “Joe Blow,” it’s a name meaning anyone. In Algren’s City on the Make, it mean an anyone from Chicago particularly.

I didn’t realize there were people who have the name. Now I’m curious about its origins. Thanks for visiting! —D

I’m doing a series of work about Scrabble games. Next on my list is to create a narrative of some sort. Have been researching haiku and came across your Scrabble Haiku sonnet. Thanks for that. Gives me cause for thought,
M

Sounds really great–I suppose you’ve already looked at Word Freak, but, if you haven’t, I’m sure you’d find more fodder there. Thanks for visiting! —D

Hi Joe……..was very flattered and SURPRISED to see a Haiku written under a collage of mine….9/07…….also disappointed that you didn’t give me credit for my artwork……….I think it’s customary to contact an artist for permission before using their work- as a fellow artist I am sure you understand this and wouldn’t like seeing your work copied ………..without knowing about it or any credit given to you. Just curious- where did you find Neighborhood 2? Maria

Maria, I’ve been quite careless about crediting artists, and, you’re right, that’s pretty unconscionable. Worse is that, this long from some of those posts, I’ve lost the original links. I will go back and credit where I can, however, and delete any work I can’t link. For the last few weeks, every image has been a link to its source, and I will continue that practice.

In the meantime, I hope you can accept this public apology along with compliments on your beautiful work. —D

I looked for Maria’s work and can see why you might be moved to use it with a piece of writing. Personally I don’t oppose someone using my work for a non-commercial purpose but I do understand her feelings and agree that asking and crediting is always better, if asking is possible. As well as making images I am moved to collect images I stumble across, too.

Of course she’s right. I don’t know how I’d react to seeing my work uncredited elsewhere, but I suppose I’d be at least bothered, maybe mad. My practice now is to have the art be a link to its source, even if it’s just a commercial site. That’s better, I think, but I’m open to another plan, if anyone has a suggestion. —D

This is a great website! It is where Poets, word lovers, romantics, artists, literary critics, …meet! It’s really fun reading what other people think about the things you are interested in.

Thank you! The interactive element of the blog is really what keeps me going. —D
